• BLOG | ELLEN DEGENERES: WHEN CHANGING YOUR MINDSET INSPIRES A COMMUNITY

  • American comedian, actress, writer and producer Ellen DeGeneres shifted her mindset to inspire her whole community.

In 1997 the actress, star of the sitcom Ellen, decided to openly announce her homosexuality. The coming out was double: both Ellens – the real one and the fictional character came out on the same day and within one year the show was cancelled.

Even in showbiz, being gay in the 90s wasn’t sugar and candies, and Ellen had no intention to put herself in such a challenging situation. So, what changed her mindset?

  • A meditation retreat in California.

During the retreat, her biggest fears came to the surface about coming out:

“Would I still be famous? Would they still love me if they knew I was gay?”

“My fear was that no, no they wouldn’t, and then it made me feel ashamed that I was hiding something. It made me feel ashamed that I couldn’t feel honest and really be who I am, and I just didn’t want to pretend to be somebody else anymore so that people would like me.”

The decision was obvious: there was no space for fears, and it was time the real Ellen started her new life.

After they cancelled Ellen, she was unemployed for 3 years, living the nightmare she had always dreaded. She sat with herself and started a regular and constant meditation practice which completely transformed her mindset. She became free, happy and ready to share her experience and new bliss with the world.

Success didn’t wait long to come, and her talk show, hosting brilliant and inspiring guests, has won 30 Emmys. Ellen is now a poster child for the LGBT community and has even received the Presidential Medal of Freedom – Americas highest civilian honour – from former president Barack Obama.

This would have never happened had Ellen not had the courage to change her mindset and abandon her anxieties.

She meditates "because it feels good. Kinda like when you have to shut your computer down, just sometimes when it goes crazy, you just shut it down and when you turn it on, it’s okay again. That’s what meditation is for me”.
