  • - WHY SHOULD BUSINESS LEADERS BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE CORONA CRISIS? -

  • It’s my belief that while not dramatically fatal for human beings corona virus could be completely fatal for many of our businesses if, as leaders, we don’t demonstrate resilience and act quickly, decisively and wisely.

    That’s why I’m offering several resources, to support our leaders, but especially our younger leaders, all over the world.

    Just to be clear, I’m not a healthcare professional, and frankly I’m not so concerned about the absolute health risks as they still appear containable at this point. The reason I’m concerned about the situation and I think other business leader ought to be too is that this week several key events have changed the outlook for the global economy. And the consequent impact on organisations large & small.

    1. PANDEMIC DECLARATION – from the WHO
    2. COUNTRY LOCK DOWNS - ITALY closing its borders; China effectively closed already for many weeks
    3. GLOBAL TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS; US – Europe air travel restricted
    4. ECONOMIC GROWTH - Significant risks increasing from ‘possibly’ to ‘how big’
    5. FINANCIAL MARKETS– down over 20% from February highs and dramatic Oil price drop
    6. IRRATIONAL BEHAVIOUR – Domestic stockpiling of foodstuffs and toilet paper
    7. LEADERSHIP RESPONSES – inconsistent at best

  • The majority of corporate leaders have not seen this kind of behavior before. I’m in my late 40s and if I’ve not experienced this level of panic, which is different from merely a financial crisis - in that it is affecting the real economy far more rapidly - then statistically, most other leaders around the world haven’t either. The reality is that most business leaders are simply ill-equipped to know what to do.

    Conversely, those who are unphased by the continuing chaos, who are calm as the make tough decision and who demonstrate resilient leadership will come out the other side bigger, stronger and more powerful.
