• BLOG | A Beginners Guide to Feeling the Energy in Your Body

  • While I know from my 4th form physics classes with Mr Porter that energy can’t be seen, we all know it’s there! Nor can we see love yet we can readily witness the effects it has on ourselves and others. We can certainly feel love and might even experience its physical consequences. And when it comes to internal and external energies it works in exactly the same way. But to begin with we might think energies are just be a bit trickier to identify and feel.

Perhaps you can already sense the subtle energies in your body, or in the people and places around you? This feeling could manifest as warmth, tickling, buzzing or pulsing. Everyone is different!

Feeling the real energy around us, in ourselves and then in others might seem the realm of science fiction but has in fact been handed down for many centuries. And I’d say, despite being a bit foofoo, it is in fact a tremendously important part of our human experience.

  • The Great Meridians of China

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been around even longer than the Great Wall of China! It’s based on several practices including Acupuncture, Cupping and Moxibustion, most of which are over 2,500 years old. But in recent years the basics of these ancient traditions have also been confirmed by science (Chen et al., 2013).

According to TCM “the body's vital energy - chi or qi - circulates through channels, called meridians, that have branches connected to bodily organs and functions” (Barrett, 2013).

Qi flows in every part of the body and assists the circulation of blood and body fluids. These channels of energy create a web in our body, called the meridian system, which also links the different parts together. The meridian system maintains the balance between the opposite forces, energies of yin and yang, and protects the body against disease.

Along these channels, there are specific places where the qi energy of the organs and meridians arrives at the bodies surface. These are the acupoints used in Acupuncture or Fascial Manipulation. Unbalanced energies or blocks in the flow of qi create illness, since the natural and healthy status of the body is balance.

The main objective of TCM is therefore to restore the natural balance of our qi by adjusting our energies.

  • Feeling Energy Techniques

For the majority of us who are yet to directly experience and feel the energy in our body, these 3 techniques will certainly help you!

    1. Energy Visualisation

Our unconscious mind resonates with images, so visualising a specific image or outcome will be of great help. Let’s start by imagining the energy!

    • If you could already feel the energy in your hands, how would we experience it?
    • How does energy feel in your body? What can you see, touch or hear? Would you recognise any other sensations or sensory experiences?

Clear visualisation creates the neural pathway of possibility in our mind so we spend less time doubting it when it begins to start

    2. Feeling Frictional Energy in the Body

This is one of the quickest and simplest way to feel energy. In physics, we learn that the friction between 2 surfaces converts kinetic energy (movement) into thermal energy (heat). And it works just the same for the energy in our body.

    • Set a timer for 2 ½ minutes and start rubbing your hands together
    • Pay attention to the movement and how the energy feels in your hands in different ways, different directions.
    • Begin to feel both the heat and the energy concentrate into your palms
    • After 2 ½ minutes halt the rubbing and separate the hands slightly, feel the continued energy connection
    • Gently move the hands further apart and towards each other a few times, absorbing the experience
    • Finally, bring the hands up to your eyes and allow the energy to radiate down to your spine.

    3. Energy Centre Stimulation

Different methods of physical stimulation will raise awareness and allow you to feel the energy.

    • Choose a key energy centre to work with such as the hands, belly or feet
    • Identify the centre and gently press with the index finger
    • Close the eyes and imagine the energy responding to the pressing

Less complicated than you thought, right? You can practice different techniques and perform these stimulation exercises just before bed!

You can start practicing your energy practices now to enjoy the extraordinary benefits! And because I know this may be a bit off the wall, I prepared a video to give you a helping hand! ENJOY! [CLICK HERE]
